FROM SEPTEMBER 23 email.
I truly hope as we close out the first month of school and head for October, things are going well with you. Please read this note and see if anything is relevant. You may need it for future reference.

I have sent several emails to the Class of 2028 describing steps in several areas that may affect you and other students when it comes to credits, classes taken elsewhere, and transferring out of Wes. However, it’s been a wee bit disheartening to see how many (okay, some) folks have either not read my messages or have disregarded the emails. It’s caused extra time and efforts on behalf of students that is unnecessary. In worst cases, it could cause issues that may affect graduation. Yikes!

If you took AP, IB, or college credit during high school (before Wesleyan), you can use up to “2” of those credits toward graduation. DO THIS NOW! Even if you think you don’t need it, it may very well make things easier for you. See below! There’s a process.

If you intend take summer or winter classes outside Wesleyan, see below! There’s a process.

If you intend to transfer and need college reports, see below! There’s a process.

Thanks much, and—as always—let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Dean Bisese

A. Winter or Summer Transfer Credit (How to bring in credit from elsewhere)

Many students to wish to take summer classes outside of Wesleyan and closer to home during the summer or winter breaks. Of course, you’ll want to transfer that credit back into Wesleyan. Great! Here are the steps you should take in planning for class(es). Students are allowed to bring in the equivalency of up to 2 total credits during the summer.

Identify the school (college, university, community college, etc.) at which you hope to take a course. Check out their admissions page for how you get registered for summer classes. Typically, it’s not an involved process, and you’ll take courses as a non-degree seeking student.

Once you find a class that might work for you, you’ll need approval from an equivalent department at Wesleyan. For example, if it’s an English class, you’ll want to get that cleared with the English department. NOTE: not all classes transfer. For example, we don’t have a business program, so there’s no one here that will or can approve a business course transfer. Different departments have different rules and folks to see; I suggest checking with their websites, administrative assistants, or chairs of the departments about how their system works.

Typically, a department will want to have (1) a link to the course description(s) and (2) a copy of the course syllabus if it is available. For some schools, the syllabi are online, for others you can just email the professor(s) teaching in the summer.

You’ll need to fill out Permission to Transfer Credit form. You will use a different pdf form for each department in which you’ll get approvals. DO NOT USE THE ONLINE APPROVAL SYSTEM. That is for STUDY ABROAD ONLY. Fill out what you can, and the sponsoring department will sign off on it. Read the form closely, as it also explains how credit itself transfers to Wesleyan from different systems.

Once you have the PTC form signed by a department, send it to me (Dean Bisese: wbisese@wesleyan.edu). I’ll file it.

Once the courses are taken and the grades are in, you’ll have that school’s registrar send the transcript directly to me (wbisese@wesleyan.edu). DO NOT send it to the general Wesleyan address is the system offers it. I can post the approved credit. (Often, the courses will also count for general education requirements.)

B. AP, IB, or ANY COLLEGE credit earned before entering Wesleyan (called “pre-matric”)

You may have AP, IB or college credit earned before coming to Wesleyan that can be used here. (Up to 2 credits). For AP and IB, see this page and links to charts about how they can be counted. If you qualify, please have the College Board send AP scores or the IB organization to send IB credits. If you have college credits, you need to have your transcripts from the college sent to me (wbisese@wesleyan.edu).

C. College Reports. (Thinking of transferring to new pastures?)

Wesleyan understands that students may wish to explore other opportunities outside of Wesleyan.

Most folks need to have college reports sent out from our office. Make sure you complete the student portion of the paperwork before you turn items in. When you are ready, please submit everything HERE. We usually turn these around and have them out in a day or so.

Please follow the directions in the link and please let us know if there are any special things we need to know about in the appropriate area. If you have questions about the process and submission, please contact Corey Petrie (cpertrie@wesleyan.edu) in the Class Dean’s Office.
