Truman Scholarship Zoom Open House 10/7 at 2pm
What is the Truman Scholarship?
The Truman Foundation identifies aspiring leaders at an important inflection point in their development – when they are college juniors – and recognize and reward their commitments to careers in public service. The Scholarship provides $35,000 for graduate study within five years of graduation from Wesleyan. Wesleyan can nominate four juniors for the scholarship, with extra slots for veterans and transfer students.
Who can apply?
For eligibility purposes, candidates must be:
* Current juniors
* US Citizens, US National residents of American Samoa, or expecting their citizenship by the date of the award.
* Planning to attend graduate school in pursuit of a career in public service. The Foundation encourages time between undergraduate and graduate school, so candidates need not commit to going immediately.
Open House:
The Truman Foundation will host our Open House for the 2027 application cycle on Wednesday, October 7 at 2:00 pm ET. Please join us at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87808769525?pwd=cME0ayzbC113aDd6A25XOyQ2adBIGM.1
The Open House is a great opportunity to get basic information about the scholarship as well as hear from recent scholars about their experience. The session is appropriate for 2027 applicants as well as potential applicants. Our Open House would also be a good introduction for new committee members as well as frequent recommendation writers or others curious about the program and what we look for in our Scholars.
We will be joined by our Scholars:
* Patrick Arp, Ohio 2026, Ohio State University, studying economics & biomedical science;
* Isabella Chow, New York 2026, Emory University, studying philosophy, politics and law;
* Rotimi Kukoyi, Alabama 2025, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, currently at Oxford University studying health improvement and evaluation;
* Jessalyn Wienk, South Dakota 2026, Augustana University, studying international studies and interreligious studies;
* Sydney Walker, South Dakota 2022, College of Saint Benedict, Resident Scholar at the Truman Foundation.
The Scholars come from a variety of different campuses both in terms of size and Truman activity, so they can discuss preparing a successful application from a diverse set of experiences. They will also talk about their leadership experiences as well as how they developed a graduate school plan (in some cases amid great uncertainty).
The session will be recorded and posted on the website under https://www.truman.gov/2027Webinars about a day or so after the session.
Write to fellowships@wesleyan.edu if you are interested in applying for the Truman Scholarship. Include your graduation year, your major(s), a copy of your resume, and summary of your career goals in public service.
