The Rule of Seven!

Hello Class of 2028!

Now that the course adjustment period has come to a close, I hope you’ve settled in and ranked your courses for your first semester at Wesleyan. This exhilarating moment isn’t just about selecting classes; it’s also about striking the balance in all aspects of college life, including co-curriculars, clubs, jobs, and athletic activities.

Rule of Seven
At Wesleyan, we follow the Rule of Seven, which serves as a guiding principle as you embark on your first year. While you may have numerous interests you want to explore, it’s essential to give yourself the opportunity to get acclimated to your new environment. Remember, you have eight semesters to make the most of the wonderful resources and experiences that Wesleyan has to offer! To help you find that delicate balance, check out tips shared by our Academic Peer Advisors (APAs)! With what remains of the summer, take the time to explore additional tips on topics ranging from time management and organization to studying tips and getting to know professors.

I’d like to provide information on a cautionary note regarding scam messages:

Report scams to our Information Technology Services (ITS)
Please be aware that scammers regularly target college students with fake job offers. These fake offers lead to students sending wire transfers, gift cards, and/or personal information to the scammers. All legitimate Wesleyan jobs will be posted through the Gordon Career Center’s Handshake platform. If you receive a fake job offer (or are unsure if an offer is fake), please send it to security@wesleyan.edu. This allows us to block the scammer’s email address and to remove the scam messages from other Wesleyan inboxes.

Information Overload?
It’s been a busy couple of months, and you’ve gotten most necessary items taken care of including your email, housing preferences, insurance items, ID card photo, etc. Give yourself a pat on the back for that. Amidst the whirlwind of information being delivered to you right now, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. But don’t worry—take a deep breath and go at your own pace. And remember, we’re here for you! Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—we’re more than happy to assist you! You can always write our student peer advisors (peeradvisors@wesleyan.edu) or me (wbisese@wesleyan.edu) for help.

Email

I highly, HIGHLY recommend not only solely using your Wesleyan email now for all things Wes related, but you should also be placing some structure to your platform. Add folders like “Advising,” or “Class Dean,” and other areas (like a folder for each of your classes this fall) to save important messages. Don’t just delete everything. Remember, you can also set up rules and direct email messages to certain folders as you learn some emails don’t need immediate attention where others do. Email (Wes’ system and email address) is the official way Wesleyan will stay in contact with you. YOU are responsible to assuring you read through everything you’ll get. During your first semester, you will instinctively learn what to address sooner rather than later.

NEW CLASS OFFERINGS!

Professor Davis and Professor Anderson are launching a new seminar this fall called Success in STEM Seminar (CIS 101).  This course is a 0.25-credit, pass/fail course that is only open to freshmen students and is specifically designed to help first-year students interested in STEM majors as they transition to college-level courses. Please see WesMaps to add this course now! There are no limits to .50 and .25 credit classes at this stage of registration.
